Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959 - 2008
Lincoln Memorial cents feature a likeness of President Lincoln on the obverse side and the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse side. There are some very unique memorial pennies that were miinted, but few if any of these remain in circulation. In 1973 over one million aluminum cents date 1974 were struck but none were put into circulation supposedly. However some were given to members of congress and there are 12 thought to still be in existence today, but are illegal to own because they were seized by the US Secret Service.
In 2009 the Lincoln cent will be redesigned in honor of the bicentennial of his birth. The reverse of the Lincoln Penny wil peature 4 different designs including a log cabin depicting his early childhood in Kentucky, the years he grew up in Indiana, his professional life as a lawyer in Illinois and his Presidency in Washington DC.
